Wave Parts

A sinusoidal or sine wave is an example of an ocean wave. Below is a graph of a sine wave.
a graph of a sine wave with labels for elevation, crest, amplitude, trough, and wavelength

Important terms to be able to define:

  • wavelength - the distance between crests or trough
  • amplitude - the height of the wave from average or zero to peak
  • crest - the top of the wave
  • trough - the bottom of the wave
  • elevation - the wave height from the trough to the crest
